Purpose | Copernicus is the European Union's Earth Observation programme and is one of the components of its Space Programme. It provides opportunities for public authorities, start-ups, and education via grants and public procurements, as well as calls, competitions and prizes. The programme collects and provides free access to huge amounts of up-to-date and accurate global data from satellites and other ground-based, airborne and seaborne measurement systems. This information means it plays a vital role in the areas of environmental and climate change monitoring and future planning; meteorology; emergency management and early warning systems; and border and maritime surveillance and security. |
